National Volunteer Week Kicks off April 15th

National Volunteer Week kicks off on April 15, 2018, with Good Deeds Day, global day of service that unites people from more than 100 countries to do good deeds for the benefit of others and the planet. Good Deeds Day is an opportunity to start National Volunteer Week by coming together with friends, family, neighbors and colleagues to do good in your community.

National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognize and thank volunteers who lend their time, talent, voice and support to causes they care about in their community and around the world. Their stories serve to inspire others to take action and discover their collective power to unite in making a difference.

This is also a time to celebrate the impact of volunteer service on our communities. The local events, volunteer projects and social media conversations that take place during this week demonstrate that service unites – bringing people together to tackle society’s tough challenges, spark change, and build stronger, more resilient communities.

National Volunteer Week was established in 1974 and has grown exponentially each year, with thousands of volunteer projects and special events scheduled throughout the week. This signature week is about honoring the impact of volunteers in our communities, and inspiring others to serve.

Brass Bugle Performers

Volunteers are invited to join the 7th Cavalry Drum and Bugle Corp of Rapid City as drummers and/or brass (bugle) performers. Musicians rehearse each Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Canyon Lake Senior Center annex.

The Corp performs at various events throughout the summer, including the Days of 76, Buffalo Round-up and others. Corp does not march. Musicians of all skill levels are invited to participate. Bugles are provided. To volunteer, or for more information dial 211 or call (605) 863-0899.

Adopt a Park Volunteers

The individuals and groups who become involved in the Adopt-A-Park Program are contributing to the betterment of the community by making park areas cleaner. WHO CAN ADOPT-A-PARK?
Any individual, neighborhood, group, or organization can Adopt-A-Park as a volunteer project. The Parks Department will continue to provide regular maintenance, while the individuals and groups will be asked to assist with the special care of the adopted areas. A letter of understanding which clarifies the responsibilities of the participating individuals or groups will be signed by the individuals or by a representative of the group and by the Parks Division Manager. Citizen ideas and suggestions about park area improvements are appreciated.
SCHEDULING The Parks Department hopes that Adopt-APark participants will fulfill their commitment at least three times a year. The suggested scheduling would be late spring, mid-summer, and fall.
GUIDELINES Litter and debris removal, weed control, flower care, reporting vandalism, and identifying hazards are the primary responsibilities of the Adopt-A-Park participants. Planting trees and shrubs, painting, and carpentry projects are additional tasks which should be coordinated with the Parks Department.
The Parks Department can provide necessary tools, equipment, and materials, as well as trash bags.

YFS Kids Fair Volunteers

Youth and Family Services looks to hundreds of volunteers to help operate attractions and ensure that children have an exciting and safe experience at Kids Fair. Volunteers are a key factor in the success of YFS’ annual fundraising events.
